Our Story

The Farm
Agriculture has been an important part of our family for nearly a century. Falling Branch Farm (aka Highland Heights Farm) was founded in 1924 by our great grandfather Calvin, who excelled in the swine industry and his son, our grandfather William, later followed in his footsteps. In the 1980’s, brothers Allen and Stewart led the farm’s next generation switching the primary focus to dairy cattle. The dairy farm steadily grew throughout the subsequent decades with the herd peaking at over 300 cows. In 2004, Allen and his wife Kim worked together to start Hawks Hill Creamery in an effort to provide quality local agricultural products and avoid dependence upon fluctuating milk prices.

The Brewery
With the creation of Maryland’s new “farm brewery” license, a passion for good beer and local ingredients, and a desire to carry on the family’s agricultural tradition, the fourth generation — led by Alex with help from siblings Rob and Elizabeth — founded Falling Branch Brewery, Harford County’s first farm brewery. After years of planning and hard work, small-batch beer production began on the farm in the fall of 2015. In the summer of 2021, the installation of our new 15-barrel brewhouse made larger-scale production onsite a reality and marked the beginning of our next chapter.

Taproom

The Taproom is a cozy refurbished 1800’s barn that is open year-round. Food trucks are set up onsite most days that we're open. The barn is heated throughout the winter months and three televisions are set up to play your favorite sports events.

Beer Garden

The Beer Garden is a relaxing outdoor space behind the taproom with an additional bar, great views of the farm, picnic tables, outdoor couches, fire pits and propane heaters, live music (weather permitting), and a huge open lawn to sprawl out on. While we almost always have plenty of seating, on the weekends from Spring through Fall we recommend bringing your own lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the farm.
